Wolf Pack’s future looks bright

Yanni Hufnagel has gained the reputation of being one of the best basketball recruiters, despite the fact that he was dropped from his high school’s basketball team. That disappointment did not stop Hufnagel, but redirected his energies into serving as color commentator for the team at the local public access television station. As a child, he devoured coaching strategy books. As the color commentator, he gained a reputation for his analytical skills.

Leaving his hometown of Scarsdale, New York, Hufnagel entered Penn State, but transferred to Cornell after a year. At Cornell, he graduated with a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations and served as basketball manager for one year. During his Cornell years, he interned with the New Jersey Nets, doing menial tasks such as laundry pickup, but his hard work did not go unnoticed. A Net’s colleague, Ryan Krueger, recommended him to Oklahoma’s coach Jeff Capel, Krueger’s, former boss.

When Harvard was looking for an assistant coach, Capel recommended him for the job. By Hufnagel’s third year, the team saw a record of 26 victories and received its first national ranking. As all assistant coaches are recruiters as well, Yanni Hufnagel and gained national recognition. CBS sports described him as a “relentless” and “energetic” recruiter.

From Harvard, Hufnagel went on to Vanderbilt University and then to the University of California, Berkley. While at Berkley, the team saw a 23-11 record and a history making No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament and recruited Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb.

Hufnagel now is at the University of Nevada, Reno as assistant coach under Coach Eric Musselman. With Hufnagel’s recruiting skills, the Wolf Pack’s future looks bright and can look forward to some of the top basketball players joining their ranks.
